Veneers Q & A

What are dental veneers?

Dental veneers are very thin covers that are placed on the front surfaces of teeth. In recent years, veneers have become an extremely popular option for correcting the appearance of an array of cosmetic issues, like:

  • Crooked teeth
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Teeth that are deeply stained or discolored
  • Uneven or worn-down tooth edges
  • Teeth that look too small or otherwise out of proportion with the rest of the teeth or the smile

How are veneers applied to the surfaces of the teeth?

The application of a dental veneer usually is completed in 2 appointments. During the first appointment, the tooth is carefully prepared for the veneer. First, Dr. Fromzel removes a tiny portion of the surface material of the tooth to make room for the veneer, so it rests “flush” with the surfaces of the neighboring teeth. Then, she makes an impression (or mold) of the tooth and selects the ideal shade for the veneer, so it blends in with adjacent teeth. The impression is sent to a dental lab that specializes in state-of-the-art veneer fabrication. Finally, Dr. Fromzel places a temporary veneer on the tooth to protect it. At the second visit, Dr. Fromzel removes the temporary veneer and cleans the tooth surface, then “dry fits” the veneer to ensure it fits properly on the tooth and looks natural before applying the veneer to the tooth with a strong adhesive. A final gentle buffing ensures the veneer fits perfectly and comfortably. In nearly all cases, veneers can be placed without needles and numbing.

What do I need to do to care for my veneers?

Veneers can be cared for with regular brushing and flossing and routine dental checkups, just like natural teeth. To prevent damaging a veneer, chewing on hard candies, ice, and other hard substances should be avoided.

Can veneers be whitened with professional whitening treatments?

No, veneers are designed to resist penetrating stains, and they’re also resistant to whitening agents. If a veneer becomes yellowed or discolored, it will need to be replaced. Also, most patients opt to have their teeth professionally whitened before a veneer is placed to ensure the veneer matches their teeth when they look their best. That also helps ensure the veneer will continue to match the teeth following subsequent whitening treatments.

How long will a dental veneer last?

With proper care, a dental veneer can last 10 or 15 years or even longer.
